DISASTER ON BIG DITCH SENDS SHIP TO BOTTOM

Steamship Newport, Sunk recently by collapse of the wharf at
Balboa, Panama. Two steel cranes-fell across it. The ship belongs1
to the Pacific ,Mail Steamship Company.

f ' Canned Pears.-
Select thoroughly sound pears.
Halve and core them. Put on the
stove to coolc in clear water, In
an agate sauce pail. Use enough
water, only to cover the fruit.
Cook slowly. Wheri the pears are
tender, but not broken, remove
from the stove and take them out
of the liquid. Set them aside.
jThen take enough of the liquid to
fill up the bottles and add sugar!
to it until it' makes a rich syrupy
Cook for a few minutes and then"1
drop the pears carefully into it,J .
letting them simmer . for tenJ
minutes. Sliced lemon, cooked
with the pears and their "liquid'
add greatly to the flavor. Use'
about two iemo'ns to half a gallon
of liquid. Can the fruit scalding
hot and seal."
