BECKER TRIAL IS ON
New York, Oct 7. The trial
of Police Lieut. Becker was called
today after a delay of several
hours while a special grand jury
was sworn in.
Both prosecution and defense
N claim that the murder of Big Jack
Zelig, the gunman, is a blow to
their side of the case.
It was from Zelig, District At
torney Whitman says, that Beck
er "rented" the gunmen who kill
ed Rosenthal. -
Zelig was shot down on a street
car Saturday night by Red Phil
Davidson, a peddler. ' Davidson,
now in the Tombs, says he killed
Zelig because he had robbed him
of his savings.
When Davidson was arrested
a cheering mob from the East
Side followed him, srouting that
he should have a medal for the
killing of the notorious gunman.
When the Becker case was call
ed today, the police drove into
the street scores of East Side
gunmen and hangers-on. No one
was permitted inthe court room
without a thorough examination.
