"Smokey" Joe Wood, cham pion pitcher of the American League, withstood the onslaught of the New York Giants, and the Boston Red Sox triumphed over the National Leaguers in the first game df the world's series. Wood pitched a remarkable game. His terrific speed baffled the Giants' and eleven of them fell on strikes. Jack Tesreau, McGraw's pitch ing selection, outpitched Wood for five innings. In " the sixth Speaker's triple started Jiis down fall and he took to cover in the seventh. Before the game Larry Doyle, captain and second baseman of the Giants, was presented with a Chalmers automobile for being .the most valuable player to his team iri the National League. There,, was 'little excitement before the game. Fans crowded every, inch of space inside the Polo Grounds, Mayor Fitzgerald of Boston and Mayor Gaynor of New" York arrived together and occupied a box back of third base. Mayor Fitzgerald delighted the fans by leaping from his box and rushing across the field to greet the Boston rooters who were in a section on the other side of the diamond.
