In 1766 the Turks qme again,
and an -army of 25,000-, was annihilated-
by 4,000- Montenegrins.
Peter I, "the headsman of
Montenegro," erected the grim
"Turk's Tower" at Cettinje, on
which. he piled. Turkish. skulls,-as
a warning to the Sultan.
In 1820. .the Turks were again
defeated and driven out.
In 1853 Montenegrins killed
4,500 Turkish soldiers in a single
day's battle and drove the Stil-
tan's forces outonce more.
In 1856 jTurks.( suddenly, ap
peared in the Black mountain val
leys and fell upon the Montene-grin'sT-SOO
Turkish skulls were
added to the tower. ' '
Two years later Mirko, "the
sword of Montenegro," caught
the Sultan's "Imperial Guard" in
a mountain trap and mowed them
Next year the same prince with
29 followers held the pass at Os
trog against 15,000 Turks and
beat them off.
In return for this Turkey
hurled its entire "military strength
against Montenegro, but after 60
battles was willing to call the war
In 1876 Nicholas, the present
ruler, declared war against Tur
key to aid Servia and killed half
the Turkish army sent against
Montenegro has no standing
