Chart showing relative military size of Turkey and Montenegro.
Montenegro, the smallest of
the Balkan states, has aroused
the admiration of the world by
going forth like David to do bat
He with the Turkish Goliath.
Montenegro cared little for the
tremendous odds against her .
and she has never cared. The his
iory of this little kingdom is one
long, glorious record of battles
against overwhelming forces.
Gladstone once said, in the
British House of Commons :
3 "In my deliberate opinion, the
traditions ot Montenegro exceed
in glory those of Marathon and
Thermopylae, and all the war
traditions' of the-world."
Tennyson wrote one of his fin
est poems on the Montenegrins
Jin their native language, "Tser
nagorans", and ended thus:
O smallest among peoples!
Rough rock throne
Of freedom! Warriors beating
back the swarm
Of Islam for five hundred
years.
Great Tsernagora! Never, since
thine own
Black ridges drew the cloud
and broke the storm,
x Has breathed a race of
mightier mountaineers."
Time after time, for many cen
turies, the Turks have hurled
army after army against $he
Montenegrins without success.
In 1703, on the plain of Tsar
velaz, the Montenegrins killed
20,000 Turk soldiers, losing but
300 men themselves.
In retaliation the Sultan, sent
120,000 soldiers the next year and
burned every house in Montene
gro, but had to retire because the
people fled to the mountain peaks
