' BECKER SENTENCED
New York,. Oct. 30. Lieut.
Charles Becker was sentenced to
death in the electric chair for the
murder of Herman Rosenthal by
Justice Goff today.
The execution was ordered dur
ing the week beginning Decem
ber 9 at Sing Sing prison.
Sheriff Harburger began the
arrangements to take Becker to
Sing Sing immediately. Mrs.
Becker, who is to become a
mother in January, plans to ac
company her husband to the door
of the death cell.
Becker was quite calm as he
stood up to face the black-clothed
justice and hear his doom pro
nounced; but Mrs. Becker, wait
ing in the sheriff's office, col
lapsed under the strain.
The proceedings today were
ghastly. The black-draped court
room, the black-gowned judge,
the whispering attorneys who
made their motions in voices that
could hardly be heard, and Beck
er, standing white and impassive,
made a scene that tried the
Becker's attorneys will file an
appeal within thonext few days
most likely, and ' the appeal is
liable to drag along for years.

J DAVIDSON TO TRIAL
New York, Oct 30. Red Phil
Davidson, slayer of Big Jack Ze
lig, went to trial for murder to
day. It was expected that Davidson

ney refused to accept any lesser
plea than second degree, with its
practical certainty of life impris
onment, Pavidson balked!
It was evident today that Dav
idson was on the point of collapse.

THE JOHNSON CASE - 1
The federal grand jury contin
ued its investigation into Jack
Johnson, the negro pugilist, to
day. The chief witnesses were- Lu
cille "Cameron, Ada Banks, the.
pug's brother, Charles, and the
doorkeeper of the Cafe de Cham
pion. It was learned today that when
the state charge of abduction of
Lucille Cameron comes up
against Johnson Nov. 19, it will
be dropped. This is taken td
mean that Johnson's indictment
by the federal grand jury is al?
