BEATRICE RYALL BREAKS DOWN UNDER TERRIBLE
THIRD DEGREE SAYS CONWAY KILLED HEIRESS
After a terrible ordeal of third
degree sweating, Beatrice Ryall
today confessed that Charles D.
Conway, the circus clown, killed
Sophia Singer.
"Conway did it," she wept. "He
struck her over the head with the
doorknob, and then he tied her
up so she" could not scream for
hdp.
"He did not mean to kill her
just -to ,rob her. He needed
money for the operation on his
leg, and he did not know how to
get it
"He was afraid to go to, the
county hospital, and get it done
free, because he thought they
would not be careful of him there.
He told me he had read terrible
stories of free hospitals.
"He and I had quarreled. He
heard Sophia ask me t ogo out
with her to meet a man. He be
came angry. He said that was
not a proper thing for either of us
to do.
"I was angry at him. I left the
room, and he and Sophia were
still quarreling about it. When
I came back Sophia was lying on
the bed, all tied up.
"I asked him what he was do
inp He told me he was Groins: to

rob Sophia. I hardly knew what
I was doing, but I was afraid not
to do as he told me.
"I didn't see him stuff anything
in her mouth. I'd have stopped
him if I had.
"I" do ot think Conway plan
ned the robbery. I think it just
canie to him during the quarrel
that here was an easy way to get
the money he needed.
"So he struck her, and tied her,
and took the money. I did not
know she was dead. Good God,
do you think I would have stayed
to see murder done, and then
gone away with the murderer?
"The clothes that we took were
gathered up by Conway. I was
so frightened I hardly realized
what we were doing.
"We got out of the house by
the back door. It was about 11
o'clock. We reached the inter
urban car safely and went to
Hammond, Ind !"
The confession came as a "cli
max to a long series of dramatic
scenes, the most brutal examples
of third degree sweating.
From the moment the Ryall
woman and Conway were arrest
