weight championship of the world in Los AngeleS December 10,
has been about everything else except heayyweight champion.

career.

thy was born- March
17, 1892, on a ranch
owned by his father,
thirty miles outside
of Lincoln, Neb.
Luther was always
outdoors and most
of the time astride
a horse.
In 1901, Luther
struck out for ninr
self. making his first
stop at the home of
a relative in Col
orado Springs, Colo.
Here he stayed for
nearly two years,
attending school.
He drifted into the
corn fields of Kan
sas With the corn
shucking season
over. McCarthy
ambled into Omaha and landed a
position as an advertising bil
distributor. He held this fdr a
few months, then landed a
"berth" with the Western Union
