New York, Dec. 19. There's
a man up on Eighth avenue with
a cleaning establishment and a
grievance. A sign in his window
lets folks know thai: lie has a
grievance, and that he knows
how to frame his woes in words.
As follows:
"As we know all our customers
had been satisfied with the work
we had done for them and now
when we moved up to 2401
Eighth avenue we got a competi
tor in the very same store where
we had been before. We hope, as
all our patrons are American in
telligent people, you would not
patronize our competitor which
is trying to tear out bite of bread
and butter out of our mouth.
People on 152d street stopped
to behold a strange couple who
walked from the elevated railroad
station to the police station.
There was a large, stout man
and a small, thin man. The
small man had one of his hands
in one of the large .man's trou
ser pockets. The large man had
one of his hands in the same
pocket, grasping the small man's
hand so tightly 'that the small
man squirmed with pain as he
Thus they proceeded along the
street, the small man begging for
mercy arid the big man striding
along without paying a bitrof
heed. Up the steps of the station
the one was dragged by the other,
and up to the desk.
Calling two policemen as wit
nesses, John Lahn. the big man,

James King, the little man, froni
his pocket. In it was clenched
Lahn's pocketbook, which the lit
tle man's hand had been in the
act of abstracting while the two
were passengers in a crowded cartf
When Lahn felt the intruding)
hand and grabbed it.
There "was no question abou:
the evidence against the accuse
in that particular case, and h
went straight to a cell, tenderly
caressing five very lame fingers.;
