This is the story of two mys
teries. The first mystery is what hap
pened in the private office of the
superintendent of Marshall Field
& Co.' November 2, 1912.
The second mystery is how
nothing has leaked into print
about what happened there.

telle Yaeger, two young girls,
Mike McGuire, a private detec
tive, and Ben C. Hinckley, assist
ant superintendent of Marshall
Field & Co,

ger went to the women's waists
section of Marshall Field & Co.
and presented a return check for
The saleswoman noticed some
thing about the check that made
it seem not exactly right. She
comuunicated with Ben Hinckley,
the assistant superintendent of
Hinckley ordered that Estelle
Yaeger should be brought to hid
office, and this was done.
Mike McGuire. of the McGuire
& White Detective Agency,
which handles most of the busi
ness of the big loop department
stores, was in Hinckley's office
when the girl arrived.
