did Male private detective search two
girls in marshall field & co.'s store?
Did He Go Through Their Stockings and Ransack Their
Flat? How Were the Girls Induced
to Sign Certain Documents?
This is the story of two mys
teries. The first mystery is what hap
pened in the private office of the
superintendent of Marshall Field
& Co.' November 2, 1912.
The second mystery is how
nothing has leaked into print
about what happened there.
The chief characters in the
tory are Hazel Krause and Es
telle Yaeger, two young girls,
Mike McGuire, a private detec
tive, and Ben C. Hinckley, assist
ant superintendent of Marshall
Field & Co,
The chief questions in the mys
tery are as follows :
Did Mike McGuire. the private
detective, personally search the
two girls and take money from
their stockings?
How did McGuire and "Hinck
ley induce the girls to sign- six
very extraordinary documents?
What power was used to keep
the story from being published?
Hazel Krause, of Tipton, Ind.,
and Estelle Yaeger were friends.
They both came to Chicago to
earn their own livings.
Hazel Krause got a job at Mar
shall Field & Co. Her friend fre
quently traded there.
On .November 2, Estelle Yae
ger went to the women's waists
section of Marshall Field & Co.
and presented a return check for
two waists.
The saleswoman noticed some
thing about the check that made
it seem not exactly right. She
comuunicated with Ben Hinckley,
the assistant superintendent of
the store.
Hinckley ordered that Estelle
Yaeger should be brought to hid
office, and this was done.
Mike McGuire. of the McGuire
& White Detective Agency,
which handles most of the busi
ness of the big loop department
stores, was in Hinckley's office
when the girl arrived.
