A THOUGHT FOR THE YEAR AHEAD BY BILLIE BURKE
The First Word When you
begin to look backward instead of
forward you are on the last lap
of life.
Are you looking backward? If
so, think of that woman 'who
made the mistake of doing this
and turned into a pillar of salt. If
you do not look forward you may
be sure that some of the sweet
ness of your nature has grown
acrid. If you can no more see
the light and beauty of life; if
you have become blind to the
pleasures of hope while regreting
the joys that are gone; if this is
so you are growing old very fast
and it is time for you to make
some new plans of living and
start following them before the
beginning of the year.
There is nothing that is known
to the physician that will prevent
hardening of the arteries as sure
ly as a long look ahead. A friend
of mine said to me the other day
that Sara Bernhardt told her
that if she accomplished all that
she had planned she would be one
hundred and thirty years old. I
immediately said to myself upon
hearing this: "There is Sara
Bernhardt's secret of eternal
youth."
The future must hold some
thing for you, even up to your
latest breath. There is no such
thing as living in the past. Re
member the past is past, you poor
little girl who is crying because a
man quite unworthy of you has
left you with a broken heart. But
take hope in the knowledge that
there is a future for every one,
and the greatest and most won
derful thing that is given to man
or woman is not love, but life.
Live it and love. it. Don't
whine as the years begin to
stretch out behind you, and,
above all else, never look back,
for if you do you will become like
Lot's wife, without power to
march along with those who are
going away from the city of yes
terday. Welcome all that life
brings to you each day. If it be
sorrow look forward to the mor
row, which will surely bring sur
cease from pain. If it be joyT
hope that it will stay a while with
you.
Only remember this one thing:
That no life is complete without
both joy and sorrow. Always
look forward to living. Never
expect to die. There is time
enough to look back and balance
the ledger when 'the constant
change of this wonderful exist
ence has become eternal calm.'
Just One Last Word Instead
of regretting yesterday do some
thing today that will make rosy
the hopes of tomorrow.
