IT READS LIKE COMIC OPERA, BUT HART IS
DEAD AND WEBB STILL AT LARGE
Comedy of Errors and Bungled Orders Surrounded
Murder of Detective Hart and Escape of
Slayer from Wabash Avenue Flat.
This is the story of the mur
der of Detective Peter Hart by
Bandit Teddy Webb. Only
parts of the story have been pub
lished before.
The story really begins last
Saturday morning, when the po
lice decided they must arrest
Teddy Webb, the auto bandit
chauffeur, and Frank Madia,
the auto bandit fence.
That night Webb and Madia
were arrested because they had
no tail lights on their auto. They
were taken to South Clark street
police station and released
when they promised to be in
court Monday.
Then State's Attorney Maclay
Hoyne got Bandit James B. Per
ry, now in the South Clark street
police station, to promise to turn
up Madia.
In the presence of Hoyne, Per
ry telephoned to Madia at Calu
met 5351 and talked to him in pig
latin.
Evidently the pig latin talk was
satisfactory to Mr. Madia. He
consented to talk to Hoyne over
the phone.
He did more. He told Hoyne
he would call on him at Hoyne's
home if promised immunity. Im
munity was promised. Hoyne
went to his home to wait for Ma
dia. But the date slipped Mr. Ma
ddia's mind, and Hoyne, yester
day forenoon, went to Madia's
pirate auto garage at 1612 South
Michigan avenue, to remind him
of it.
Strange as it may seem, Mr.
Madia was not in. Hoyne talked
to Madia's brother, Joseph, an
engaging youth. Brother Joseph
did not know where Brother
Frank was.
It did not occur to Hoyne to
search the garage at this time.
'Twas well it did not. Bandit
Webb was there. He might have
been rude to Hoyne.
