McGinnity is best remembered
for his string of victories, his
ability to pitch winning double
headers, and the fact that he
pitched for three major league
champions Baltimore, Brooklyn
and New York.
In 1900 he pitched 41 games for
Brooklyn, and finished with a
winning percentage of .769. In
1904 he repeated, leading his
teammate, Mathewson, and wind
ing up with a high mark of .814.
In 1905, when the Giants wal
loped the Athletics four games
out of five, in the world's series,
it was Mathewson's shut-out
pitching that gave them the ver
dict. McGinnity 's castiron arm,
however, was what put them in a
position, to cop the world's title.
He was worked so often that
when the world's series rolled
around he was all in. Joe was
born in 1873, down in the coal
mining district of Illinois. That
makes him 40 years old- Just to
show what a real "iron man" he
is, Hugh Jennings offered him a
contract last year as relief twirler.
Pretty good boost for a man of
his age. Since he retired from the
majors four years ago he has
managed the Newark, N. J., team,
in which he had a part interest.
He has sold out and purchased a
franchise in the Northwestern
With two durable fellows like
Walsh and McGinnity a manager
could fire the rest of his staff.
Leon Ketchel was outclassed
by Danny Ridge in their bout in
New York. Leon showed the
Ketchel fighting spirit, boring in
all the way. A little more polish
and he will be a good man. 1
