venture. He told me that he took
up his twentieth century road
agenting more for the sake of the
excitement he got out of it than
for the money.
"I always did love excitement,"
he said, "and I could get more
this way than in any other way I
know. As the cities get bigger
and the whole country more set
tled, the chance for adventure
gets less. I tried 'cowboying'
once, but, gosh, that was slow.
Why, I could have more fun in
one night in New York or Chi
cago than in a year on the plains.
"I have never yet had a bit of
fear in my heart. I am caught
now, but I am honest when I tell
you that I never suspected I
would be. In all my wanderings
I never had the slightest feeling
that anyone was following me. I
don't believe I ever turned once
to look back. Even after my en
counter with the detective I was
not afraid. I was awfully excited,
but not from terror."
Suddenly Webb leaned forward
and took a good look at me.
"Say, lady," he said, "you know
the way to get away with things
nowadays is to try something
new. Women can do almost any
thing in this game because no
body suspects that they can be
'on' yet. Now let me give you a
little piece of advice. If you ever
want to do anything and want to
hide, keep in a crowd. Go where
there are people all kinds of
people. The minute I got out of
the loop district, here in Chicago,
I was as good as caught. It's the
real stuff I am giving you, lady
and here's my hand on it!"
And Robert Webb stuck
through the bars of his cell that
fine, almost feminine hand that
has so many times shoved the
gaping muzzle of a very big and
very cold revolver against some
body's head. I took it because I
knew that here was a fine boy
gone wrong. Nobody had ever
taught him how to put his ener
gy into the right channels. I
wonder did he ever have a
mother?
SEA FOAM CANDY
Put into a saucepan three cups
of sugar, two-thirds of a cup of
corn syrup and one-half cup of
water. Boil until a little dropped
into a cup of cold water spins a
brittle thread. Beat the whites of
two eggs stiff. Turn the hot
syrup over it in a thin stream,
beating all the time until nearly
stiff. Add one cup of nut meats
of any kind preferred and turn
out on a buttered plate.

Daily Healthogram.
Sleeping and living outdoors is
good for people who "can't keep
warm." It stimulates the heat
producing function. The body
will make more heat when sleep
ing out in the cold, well covered,
than in an overheated room in
doors, and if your body gets used
to the cold it will form the habit
of keeping warm.
