v An American who had taken a
German friend to see Niagara
Falls was astonished to see the
German stand and gaze stolidly
at the roaring cataract without
the faintest sign of being im
pressedi Finally, unable longer
to conceal his disappointment,
the American said:
. "Don't you think that's a won
vat? asked the German.
"Why, that gigantic volume of
water pouring over that lofty
The German was silent for a
few seconds. Then he looked up
land said : '
L, "Veil, vot's to hinder it?"
WHAT HE HEARD
"A young fellow has been call
ing on my -daughter for the las',
two years and running up the gas
bill," said the sad-faced parent.
"His hours in the parlor have
been from about 7 p. m. to 1 a. m.
Toward midnight the other night
I thought I would get an idea of
this courtship, so I placed myself
behind a curtain and heard this:
" 'Do you love me?-'
" 'Of course I do!'
" 'Yeq don't !'
" 'You don't!'
"'You don't! ' After the
297th round I remember no more
until I heard somebody say:
" 'Bring some more water,
George ; he's coming to.' "
Little Madge contracted ap
pendicitis, and had to be sent to
the hospital to have an operation
performed. She bore it all very
coolly and pluckily. When she
became convalescent the surgeon
came to remove the stitches that
had been put in the wound. The
child's idea of dignity was very
much upset and she demanded,
indignantly: "Do you s'pose I
came here to be all stitched up
and then unpicked again?"
Daughter Shall I take an urn
brella to post this letter, mother!
Mother No, stay in the house.
It isn't a fit night for a dog to be
out. Let your father post the letter.
