O'HARA INVESTIGATION OF WHITE SLAVERY
STRIKES AT THE CAUSE OF VICE
" At last public officials have been found who have the courage
to go to the very bottom of t)fe white slave BUSINESS, and do
something to stop the MAKING of white' slaves.
The legislative committee, headed by Lieut. Gov. O'Hara, is
wading right through thcpowerful pull of some of Chicago's mos
eminentcitizens, and turning the fight on the CAUSE, or one of the
causes of vice and crime. N
Reputable witnesses with long experience in dealing with the
underworld have publicly testified that low wages Have driven some
homeless girls to a life of shame.
The committee has announced that it will summon big em
ployers to appear and answer questions under oath as to the wages
they pay the women and girls who work for them and help make
themselves millionaires. x . "
. But there is still danger. The forces. and inftuences.of organized
greed wfll get busy fo head off this investigation, and to block
further efforts of the committee to' expose the shame of big em
ployers before the people of Chicago.
BIG BUSINESS will get busy. It always does. It :'will help
ordinary vice crusades, that mean nothing more than haying the
police close up the resorts and arrest the women. - -
Bift when people attempt to get t the cause, . then BIG
BUSINESS gets cold feet. Saving girls before they go -wrong might
interfere with business,, you know.
So now. is the time for all the organizations of good men and
woftien, who want to sve souls' and bodies, to get right back of the
O'HaVa white slave committee, and see that no powerful influence
is successful in any effort that maybe made-to suppressthis investi
gation into low wagfes.
Let the -light be turned on. ' Expose. the greedy men who are in
any way responsible for white slavery. Put them under oath. Make
them tell the people of Chicago anjd the state of Illinoisjwhat wages
they expect homeless girls to live .decent lives on.
THE ENTIRE" STATE OF ILLINOIS SHOULD GET
BACK OF THIS COMMITTEE, AND STAND BACK OF IT TO"
THE FINISH. LET THE WORK GO ON,
