Christopher Columbus Crabb is an
attorney. He lives at 2454 Lake View
Grabb's career is now under a rigid
The brothers of Mrs. Mary Spiegel,
who died in Crabb's home, March' 27
last, leaving him $200,000, have de
manded this investigation.
The brothers say that the signa
ture of the alleged will of Mrs. Spie
gel, which Crabb filed the day of her
death, is a forgery. Also they say
that if it is not Mrs. Spiegel spelleji
her own name wrong, signifying she
was in no condition to make a will.
A daughter of one of the brothers
says that 10 days before her aunt
died, Mrs. Spiegel showed, her a copy
of. a will leaving almost all her prop
erty to her brothers.
And the brothers declare it is their
belief that Mrs. Spiegel did not die; a
Crabb is a Canadian, He came to
Chicago about 20 years ago. Even
then he was rich ' by .inheritance.
A wealthy Canadian relative had
died. Crabb and his sister both
claimed the property. Crabb took
the case into court and won.
In Chicago he became friendly with
"Lizzie Allen," whose real name was
Ella Williams, one of the best known
women of Chicago's underworld.
Seventeen years ago "Lizzie Allen"
died. The nurse who attended her
in her last illness was Helen-Bean.
When "Lizzie Allen's" will t was
filed, it was discovered that she had
left Crabb the notorious Everleigh
club, in the redlight district, and the
fashionable residence at 245,4 Lake
View avenue, in which Crabb now
A brother of "Lizzie Allen" ob
jected seriously to this, and contested
the wili in the courts:
But, Crabb won, and, having won,
promptly married Helen Bean, the
woman who had nursed "Lizzie Al
len." Five years later, Mrs. Crabb, the
former Helen Bean, fell ill.
Crabb imported Elizabeth Cum
mings from his old home in Canada
to nurse her.
Mrs. Crabb died. Crabb married
It was Elizabeth Cummings Crabb
who nursed Mrs'. Spiegel in her last
Coroner Hoffman has ordered Pro
fessor Walter S. Haines, an expert
chemist, to examine the viscera of
Mrs. Spiegel and see if he can detect
Probate Judge Cutting has ap
pointed the Standard Trust & Sav
ings bank as administrators of the
Spiegel'estate to succeed'Crabb.
Under Cutting's orders, a repre
sentative ,of the Standard "Trust &
Savings went to Crabb's home and
there seized all property that had be
longed to Mrs. Spiegel.
Th'e copy of the will'Mrs. Spiegel
showed her .niece 10 days before her
death has. mysteriously disappeared. 7
The Spiegel inquest has been post
poned to April 18.
