MYSTERIOUS MAN IDENTIFIED -
The mysterious man of mystery
whom Miss Ethel Newcomb claims
as her husband was identified as
Weaver B. Clarke,, of Richmond,. Va.,
a confidence man, today.
The identification was made by
Hugh McCaffrey, a Pinkerton oper
ative. CJarke is said to'b'e the "man who
swindled Mrs. G: A. Temple, of Lit
tle Rock, Ark., six months 'ago, in
much the same manner as Miss New
comb claims fie swindled.her.
Miss Newcomb says she met Clarke
in San Francisco under the name of
Jack Lewis, that she-married him and,
that he later deserted her, taking
with him' about $3,500 worth of her
Clarke is said " to have courted Mrs.
-Temple under his real name, induced
her to come to 'Chicago and then to
Milwaukee, and there deserted her,
taking her jewelry with him.
Clarke was arraigned in the South
Clark street court today, but the case
was continued until April 22.
It is believed that Clarke is known
as "Happy Jack Lewis" on all the
western race tracks.
A dirty-looking stranger entered
a hotel. "Where's the bar?" he asked
of Pat, who was standing at the door.
"What kind of a bar?" asked the lat
ter. '.'Why, a liquor bar, of course.
What do-you suppose " I mean?"
"Well," drawled Pat, with a twinkle
"I didn't know but what you might
