JIk6 to, talk, to the parents. I would
say to THEM:
" 'It is foolish and wicked of you to
teach your children to fear a police
man. It is criminal of you" to make a
"bogie man" of him. Some Jay a
tragedy may come into your family
just because you haven't brought up
your boys and girls to trusthe blue
coats and brass buttons.' "
But all that would be a big job.
And just now Mrs. Bntton is busy
with another job almost as import
ant. She is teaching the Chicago
police force.
The Chicago police have to go to
school nowadays, and Major Funk
iouser, who runs the school, asked
Mrs. Bntton to tell .them how to treat
women and children. So she is tak
ing all these thousands of policemen,
43 at a time, and making them under
stand the importance of being REAL
FRIENDS of girls and boys.
The other day she talked to Tier
first class. And she told them the
story of Officer Murray.
Murray had been on the Hull
House beat- He was a fatherly "cop
per," with always a friendly word of
advice for the wayward girl and a
kindly, protecting hand for little
children.
One day Mrs. Britton had been tell
ing a Hull House class of boys and
girls about George Washington.
When she got through, she asked:
'Now children, who is the greatest
man in American history?"
"Officer Murray!" piped a young
ster. . She was disappointed. She thought
she would have to start all over
again.
"WHY do you think Officer Murray
is the greatest man?" she asked.
"Because he is kind to children!"
the boy answered. And Mrs. Britton
let it go at that. For she remembered
a still greater Man who had been
great in just that way.
The policemen got the point of the
story, all right. Then she went on
find urged them not to frighten chil-
ldrenwith a show OfAauthorityj"and
to be gentle and courteous to all
women. And when she got" through,
those burly policemen 'came up and
shook her hand, and thanked Tier.
