MAY ASK FOR MILITIA TO ,
PROTECT TOWN IN STRIKE
Wharton, N. J., May 16. Appeal
may be made to Gov. Fielder tonight
to send militia here to, protect the
town against 200 strike-breakers who
arrived last night to take the places
of 500 striking miners of the Empire
Iron and Steel Co.
Heavy firing has been heard in the
direction of the Mt Hope mine, and
explosions have shaken the sur
rounding country.
One man was reported killed in a
battle between strikers and special
mine guards. Several men said they
had been attacked on the road to this
town by the deputies.
Numerous dynamite explosions re
cently have been laid at the door of
the strikers by the company officials.
The strikers claim the explosive was
planted by the officials in the hopes
of getting militia here to break the
strike.
Representatives of Gov. Fielder
have investigated the situation, and
will make a report of conditions.

NO RECOGNITION MADE TODAY
OF PAGE PROTEST
London, May 16 No recognition
by the foreign office was made today
of the London Trades Council's pro
test against Walter H. Page, who is
now on the Atlantic bound for Lon
don as U. S. ambassador to'the Court
of St James.
The resolution adopted by the
council says that the body "strongly
protests the appointment to the
Court of St. James of an' ambassador
who is a bitter opponent of organized
labor in his own country, and re
quested President Wilson, to recall the,
appointment"
Copies of the resolution were sent
to President Wilson and Sir Edward
Grey, British secretary of state for
foreign affairs.
