Harvey Pratt Judson Tells OyHara Commission Men
and Women Workers Get What They Are Worth,
Even If They Can't Live- On It,
If the testimony given before the
O'Hara. commission today by Harry
Pratt Judson, president of Chicago
University, had come from the pres
ident of any other university it would
have been sensational.
But seeing that it did come from
the president of John D. Rockefeller's
expensive educational joint, it was
xmly what might be Standardoily ex
pected. Judson wore a very important air,
and barked out his answers to the
commission somewhat after the man
ner one might expect some one of
real importance to talk to his office
boy. He positively writhed in his
chair when the genial Senator Beall
addressed him as "Doc."
Judson does not believe va. a mini
mum wage He believes absolutely
that every man and woman, boy and
girl gets just the wages they are
worth.
If a man is only getting $10 a week,
a woman $6 a week, a boy $5 a week,
or a girl $2.50 a week, Harry Pratt
Judson believes that that is the exact
amount they are worth.
Harry Pratt Judsoruobviously does
not put any very high valuation on
the lives of those human beings
whom he doubtless would refer to as
"the lower classes."
Possibly such human beings, in the
mind of Harry Pratt Judson, were
brought into existence only that they
might help accumulate Rockefeller
millions to the end that Rockefeller
might be induced to part with a few
more mites in the Judson direction.
Efficiency would be the watchword
in any business owned by Harry
Pratt Judson. If a man, woman, boy
or girl employe of his were not able
to put great profits into the Harry
Pratt Judson pocket, Harry Pratt
Judson proba"bly would regard him or
her as utterly inefficient.
Judson does not believe that col
lege graduates fail in the business
world. He said he thought that the
majority of them earned more money
than skilled mechanics.
