"SISTER OF MEN" HAS FOUGHT BATTLES OF
WOMEN NOW SHE'S RUNNING FORJUDGE
Mrs. Clara Shortridge Foltz.
Los Angeles will soon b,e saying
"Her Honor, Judge Clara "Shortridge
Foltz," ' if its citizens, particularly
women, .have their wish.
Mrs. Foltz was California's first
woman lawyer and also the first
deputy district attorney. She served
as a member of the State Board of
Charities and Corrections, a trustee
of title State Normal schools and has
held many other positions of distinction.
When Mrs. Foltz attempted to en
ter Hastings Law College to prepare
herself . for the bar examinations,
the trustees decided that in theirN
"enlightened discretion it was not to'
the best'interests of the college to
admit females." But Mrs. Foltz got
in! She fought the case through
courts until co-education in Califor
nia was accomplished. This was her
first fight. Shehas been fighting'
