weak in the kneesand so they aren't

Prom my many talks with Chris
tine, I believe that's what happened
to her. And when the brute left her
she was just what she told me when I
got back from Salt Lake, "not good
any more."
She may haye loved, or thought
she loved, the fellow once. But now
she has refused to testify against oth
er men just because she wants to
"get" that' one and doesn't want to
take the edge off her story by telling
it against others.
- Why do mothers keep their daugh
ters in ignorance of the dangers that
threaten them?
It is because of that false modesty,
or whatever it- is, that so many re
fined young ladies fall easy victims to
the white-slavers.
Home, girls are exposed to more
dangers than girls who find them
selves strangers and alone in big
cities.
The strange girl is aware that pit
falls surround her and she is alert
to avoid them. That is where she
has the advantage of the refined
school girl from the respectable
home, who never hears or reads or
sees anything wrong,-whose parents
rear her like a delicate lily in a glass
case, so that the first breath of un
tempered air proves too much for her
and she withers.
The home girl is kept in ignorance
of true conditions and blunders blind
ly ahead until she falls into the snare.
But this isn't saying that the girl
alone in a big city has not a hard
time trying to keep otit of the mire.
If she has even 'another girl as com
panion she is comparatively safe.
