Billy Sullivan to get the old hop back
on the ball.
That is what too much work did
to Walsh. It would be a crime if
Russell should go the same route.
Hal Chase's value to the Sox is
becoming more apparent every day.
In the field, at the bat, on the bases,
Hal is playing a bang-up game, the
brand that made him famous when
he first joined the Yanks and was a
youngster trying to make good in the
league. His triple yesterday drove
in the only two runs the Sox scored
and two stops of hard-hit balls
around first base kept the Naps from
scoring when Russell was beyond his
depth.
With two men on base in the sev
enth inning Sam Crawford walloped
one of Hoy Mitchell's shoots for a
homer, giving the Tigers enough runs
to beat St Louis. Dubuc was hit
hard, but kept out of danger. Cobb
got three hits. George Stovall dup
licated. Four singles, a wild pitch and a
sacrifice fly bunched enabled the
Cards to trim Pittsburgh. St Louis
only made five hits, but chased Hen
drix and Camnitz by bunching them.
Kommers, the new Pirate outfielder,
was a whale again, clubbing a triple
and two singles. The youngster has
made at least two hits in every game
since joining Pittsburgh.
Frank Chance is still trying to plug
holes. He has just bought Daniel
Boone, crack shortstop of the Texas
League, for fall delivery. This is the
youngster's first year in professional
ball, but he is the sensation of his
league.
President Navin of Detroit has
made an offer to the Cleveland offi
cials for Larry Lajoie, benched in
favor of Terry Turner. Rumors to
the effect that Lajoie was peeved at
Manager Birmingham over being dis
placed caused Navin to make the of
fer. He has small chance of obtain
ing the slugging Frenchman. Larry
and Birmy will patch up any slight
differences that may exist, and it is ,
I by no means certain that Lajoie's
bench duty will be permanent His
hitting is too valuable an asset to be
dispensed with.
The management of the Milwau
kee American Association cluh has
let it be known that an offer of $15,
000 has been received for Outfielder
Chappelle, but the name of the team
with the big bankroll has not been
disclosed. It is known that the White
Sox, Cleveland, Brooklyn and Giants
are after the hard-hitting youngster.
Manager Callahan of the Sox looked
Chappelle over last week and was
much impressed.
