"There is no question the unions
have helped build up Springfield.
They have contributed greatly to the
growth and prosperity of the city.
Through the unions skilled labor has
risen to from $3 to $6 a day. It
would not have gone above $2 a day
without organization. The result is
that the men spend their money at
home, have enough to live on, and
live well, patronizing local merchants.
As the high cost of living has be
come higher, the wage scale has been
increased correspondingly, making
the city prosperous. Union labor has
been public spirited in Springfield.
"Springfield is one of the best or
ganized cities in the state. The
printers first organized in 1882. The
Trade and Labor Assembly, with six
allied organizations, was formed in
1882. This was affiliated with the
American Federation of Labor under
its present name, in 1893. It has
grown since until it has sixty-two al
lied councils with 6,000 members."
The present strike of the carpent

There was a lockout of miners in
1908, and the miners won that fight.
