Attempt of Aldermen to Railroad the Job Through
Council Temporarily Sidetracked Uncle Sam Gets
After the Bell Telephone Trust as a Monopoly.
Watch .that telephone deal. Aid. Merriam tempor
arily blocked it yesterday. But there are millions in it
for the telephone trust and the tunnel company. They
won't sleep while there's a chance to grab off those mil
lions and take them out of the pockets of the people of
Chicago. Telephone users now have time to organize to
protect their interests. This affects every telephone user
in Chicago, whether he has one 'phone or the other.
Alderman Merriam temporarily blocked the big telephone deal yester
day, by which the telephone trust hoped to gobble in the automatic com
pany of Chicago, and along with it the patents and business of the Auto
matic Electric Company.
At a meeting of the council gas, oil, and electric light committee, Atty.
Dan Schuyler, representing 'the tunnel company, which owns- the auto
matic, wanted the ordinance amended so the tunnel company could sell its
telephone plant to the Bell 'phone trust
Schuyler read a letter from Pres. Ho'tchkiss of the tunnel company,
Informing council that the tunnel company on July 7 had given an option
