He was forced to quit here because of
his lame knee, Bodie playing left field
without damage to either team. Scott
held Boston to seven hits and deserv
ed a win. Engle, Gardner and Hooper
upset him. In the second O Bnen was
good for six innings, Lathrop was
not scored on in the seventh and
Benz escaped in the eighth. Six hits
were nailed by the Red Sox, the Cal
lahans getting nine. Buck Weaver
cracked three hits, but also cracked
four times in the field.
The Sox were trimmed a plenty
and at the end didn't have an alibi.
They were punk and didn't deserve to
Demaree and Fromme bested Doak
and Sallee in a pair of pitchers' duels,
St. Louis dropping both games to the
Giants. Huggins men got five hits
in each game. Demaree scored the
only run of his game with a sacrifice
fly. Burns sewed up the second for
New York with a homer. Fletcher
fielded sensationally in the two at
tacks. Hendrix had nothing to deceive
the Phillies in the pinches and Pitts
burgh dropped another. Alexander
relieved Mayer in the sixth and held
the Pirates scoreless. The two pitch
ers were the only Phils who failed
to hit. Becker got a homer and sin
gle and Doolan a triple, and single.
Hendrix and Butler, with a triple
each, were responsible for all the Pi
. -rate runs.
The old Cub battery, Brown and
Kling, put another game away for
Cincinnati. Brownie relieved John
son in the seventh with Brooklyn two
runs ahead and did not allow a hit.
Kling came through in. the eighth
with a single that scored two runs.
He also got a double and another
one-spot Berghammer and Stengel
each pried loose homers. Tinker left
his team to go to the bedside of his i
wife, who is sick in Kansas City.
Every Mackman, with the excep
tion of Pitcher Brown, took at least
one safe smash at the offerings of
Dauss and House, and Detroit was
licked handily. Crawford got three
singles, half the Tiger total. Lapp
smashed a triple and single for the
Joe Engel, Clark Griffith's young
right-hander, is beginning to arrive.
He won his second game of the series
from St. Louis, letting the Browns
down with three hits. In the two
battles St Louis has hit safely only
five times. Gandil got three hits, and
was a big factor in the Washington
victory. Leverenz did not grant a
A big inning in each game 'gave
Cleveland a double win over the
Chankees. Pour runs were scored in
the sixth inning of the first fight and
six in the fourth inning of the sec
ond. Joe Jackson got a homer, dou
ble and two singles. Midget Leibold
tripled once and singled three times.
Eddie Sweeney got three hits in the
first game for New York. Kahler and
Mitchell did the pitching for Cleve
land, Keating, McConnell, Warhop
and Schulz making a stab at the
same job for New York.
Rube Benton, Red pitcher, collided
with a street car while riding his
motorcycle in Cincinnati last night
and received a broken jaw. He will
be out of the game several weeks.
Clark Griffith has signed another
left-hander. His name is Bentley,
and he is a Washington sand-lnttpr
Griff now has six southpaws either
with the team or farmed out.
