IT HURTS LIKE THE DICKENS
A" prominent church of Stockton,
Cal., seems to have ethics whittled
down to a pretty fine point. Its dea
cons have dropped Wm. A. Dorr from
the membership, because, for
months, he "has not attended serv
ices or fraternized with the parish
ioners." No account seems to have been
taken of 'Mr. Dorr's evident excuse.
For months he has been defending
his life and he is now under sentence
of death for murdering Geo. E.
Marsh, in Massachusetts. Loyalty to
church membership is a mighty fine
trait and a man should fraternize
with his fellow parishioners as much
as he can, but there are usually cir
cumstances over which a convicted
murderer has no control, and it is
doubtful if fraternizing with such
would be the desire of parishioners,
But what is to follow if churches
are not brave and honest before the
world? What of the churches if, in
stead of being brave and honest, they
make themselves ridiculous? To say
that Dorr was dropped because he
wouldn't fraternize with the parish
ioners -was. a lie, evident to all. It is
a mighty sad thing to contemplate.
