HBP made it appear that he and Evers had patched, their differences, and were living in peace and harmony. Altogether, this was some politic move, and it is a cinch that C. Webb Murphy, real manager of the Cubs, was the instigator. Nobody seems to know just why Murphy and Evers took the little jaunt yesterday in the owner's auto. It may have been for their health, but the fact that Orvie Overall also made one of the party gave rise to the belief that a bush league pitcher 'may have been looked over. It's a cinch Orvie wasn't taken along mere ly for ballast Be that as it may, the Cubs surely did some swell clouting under the direction of Leach. Sixteen hits for 24 bases and thirteen runs is a fair day's work. Ten of the swats and an equal number of runs were scored in the first two innings, the great Nap Rucker getting the heaviest share of 'the bombardment. Cliff Curtis was treated rudely, Williams greeting him with a home run while the bases were loaded. The debut of Williams in the posi tion vacated by Mike Mitchell in left field was the real sensation of the day. The Notre Dame youngster didn't cost the West Side team a mil lion dollars, but he came through im pressively in the batting line. Four times he faced the Brooklyn pitchers, and his efforts resulted in a home run and three ringing singles. He was responsible for seven runs. His first hit was a single to right off Nap Rucker with the bases jammed. Two runs careened home. Cy then forgot to touch second on Bridwell's hit and was called out. The next time he batted was against Curtis with the bases full, and he poled a homer to left center. His third hit went over third base and the fourth over first ,He showed ability to hit both left and right handers, and also hit to every field. This latter fact is particularly pleasing. It means he will be a hard ' man for the opposing fielders to play for, and he will get many hits because of this uncertainty on the part of the enemy. Naturally, the Notre Dame lad still has some rough edges, but they will rub off if he is handled correctly. This is only his second season in the big tent, and he is getting his first chance as a regular. In the field he snagged five flies. His only mistake was in holding a fly ball with a man on first base. The runner did not take ad vantage of the laggard work, so no damage resulted. These faults will be remedied as the youngster fits into Fred Luderus. his position and becomes accustomed to his new surroundings. Zim walloped a double and two sin gles, Leach a double and single, Brid well and Schulte two singles each, Phelan a triple, and Needham un corked a double with the bases full that cleaned up. Tomorrow Charley Dooin and his gang and Phillies come to the West Side for a series of four games, and the locals will have to fight hard to make the result an even break. After a disastrous slump, which tumbled them from first place to a poor sec ond in a couple of weeks, the Phils have gotten together and right now
