HOW THE SENATORS STAND ON
WOMAN SUFFRAGE
Washington, D. C, Aug. 7. The
presentation of woman suffrage peti
tions to Congress resulted in declara
tion against woman suffrage by the
following three senators: Bankhead
of Alabama, Martine of New Jersey
and Thornton of Louisiana. Declara
tions in favor of woman suffrage
were made by the following 22 sen
ators: Ashurst of Arizona, Bristow
of Kansas, Chamberlain of Oregon,
Clapp of Minnesota, Crawford of
South Dakota, Gallinger of New
Hampshire, Jones of Washington,
LaFollette of Wisconsin, Owen of Ok
lahoma, Pittman of Nevada, Poindex
ter of Washington, Pomerene of Ohio,
Ransdell of Louisiana, Shafroth of
Colorado, Sherman of Illinois, Smith
of Michigan, Smoot of Utah, Thomas
of Colorado, Thompson of Kansas,
Townsend of Michigan, Warren of
Wyoming and Works of California.
Other senators, who took the wo
men's petitions and. presented them
to the senate without comment, or
with non-committal expressions,
were 33 in number, as follows: Bacon
of Georgia, Brandegee of Connecti
cut, Burton of Ohio, Chilton of West
Virginia, Clarke of Arkansas, Colt of
Rhode Island, Dillingham of Ver
mont, Gronna of North Dakota,
James of Kentucky, Johnson of

arise to present petitions. Some of
them no doubt were purposely not
present.
