Is the personal fear and the reactions
from the knife's pain that causes'
deaths from shock in a word, that
these are shock. So he systematic
ally goes about removing this fear
and eliminating.. the pain.
The treatment) the patient con
sists of putting" him under the influ
ence of anaesthetics. Dr. Crile uses
practically three kinds of anaes-r
thetics. One kind is called local.
Cocaine is of .this type. Cocaine put
Qn the flesh stops all sensation in the
part to which ittls applied. Dr. Crile
uses a preparation similar to cocaine.
And he also uses an anaesthetic
like ether or chloroform that puts the
patient to sleep. He uses these two
once or twice under the form of
The first time the patient takes
them he is assured that he is not to
be operated on. He falls into a pleas
ant sleep and when he wakes he feels
The next day the same thing is
done. By the time the third day ar
rives the patient has lost his fear of
taking the stuff the doctor gives
This time, after he has fallen
asleep, he is wheeled into the operat
ing room and the operation is per
formed. Then another substance is
injected into the tissues around
where the operation has taken place
which prevents the sensation of pain,
and this effect of absence of pain
lasts for several days after the oper
ation has been performed. . '
After the work of the knife is com
pleted the pktient is put back in bed.
When he wakes he doesn't feel any
pain and he is not conscious of hav
ing undergone any unusual expe
rience. By the time the effects of the drug
wear off so has all reason for pain,
and all the patient has to do is to wait
until the muscles that have been sep
arated in the operation grow to
gether again to be as active as he
The preparation Dr. Crile uses to
prevent pain during the hours and
days succeeding an operation is
quinine, and urea. In producing
sleep for the patient, which is in the
form of a protection of the patient
against the knowledge of the actual
operating, ether or nitrous oxide are
used. Novocaine is the preparation
used before the operation to prevent

A strong plea for a minimum wage
law for women was made in a lecture
at the University of Chicago by Prof.
Henry A. Millis, of the University of
