8 DEPUTY SMOKE INSPECTORS.
FIRED FOR GRAFTING
Eight deputy city smoke inspectors
were found guilty of petty grafting
by the civil service cojmmission and
were discharged. It was found that
the accused men accepted gifts of
meat, shoes, neckties, railroad passes
and small amounts of money.
Protection was given violators of
the city smoke ordinance in return
for these favors.
The eight discharged men are:

Daniel P. Shea, 711 Sibley st.
John L: Sheri'dan, 5333 Prairie ave
nue, was exonerated.
Six firms were named in the tes-,
timony as ones who gave presents to
the inspectors. Among them was
Sears-Roebuck, of which Julius Ros
enwald, the well-known ice water
merchant, is president. In this case
philanthrophy took the form of
shoes. j
Other firms and the presents they
gave are:
Miller & Hart gave -the inspectors
hams and bacon.
Sears, Roebuck & Co., of which
Julius Rosenwald is the president,
gave the inspectors shoes.
Carter & Holmes contributed neck
ties. '
The Illinois Central Railroad Com
pany supplied railroad passes.
The Chicago Cold Storage Com
pany gave money.
A railroad, so far unnamed, gave
money.
No action against these firms on
charges of giving bribes has be"en'
started.
TO PROBE WHAT IS BELIEVED TO
BE BABY TRAFFIC :r.
An investigation into what is be
lieved to be baby traffic was, ordered
by Judge Uhlir as a result of disclos
ures in the case of Clara Mohr, who,
it is alleged, foisted a newly-born in
fant, not her own, on her husband. (
Mrs. Mohr, 25 years old, living at
28 S. Halsted street, was arrested on
a charge of delinquency. It is alleged
that she procured a baby at the
American Hospital and tried to palm
it off on her husband as her own.
Mrs. Jennie Jugurich, 625 West
Taylor street, the mother of the In
fant, assisted in disposing of it. Mrs.
Mohr declared that she received $li0
for accepting the child, and involved
a woman physician, Elizabeth M.
Connors, 742 West Gongress street,,
to whom she said she paid all except
$10 of the money.
The physician denied any connec
tion with the case and denied that a
receipt for $100 bearing her signa
ture was in her handwriting.
The agent between Dr. Connors,
Mrs. Mohr and the mbther is alleged
to be Mrs. Josephine Locasio, who
did not appear in court.
Judge Uhllr has ordered the state's
attorney to make a thorough inves
tigation and-says he will make an in
vestigation of his own when he
comes back from his vacation, as he
is tif the opinion that it is easier to
get babies than puppies in Chicago.

. CAME TO WED GOT 60 DAYS
Milwaukee, Wis., Aug. 14. " Judge,
day," said Miss' Fay Coe, who states
that she lives in Springfield, 111.
"Friday's an unlucky day," said the
judge. "Sixty days." Fay was
charged with stealing $20 from a
gentleman friend.
