DAILY COMMENT ON
"If the city or the state can only
prevent men from carrying deadly
weapons crime-will be diminished by
three-fourths." Examiner.
Agreed. Let's start by disarming
newspaper gunmen. Two unoffend
ing citizens were murdered last year
by gunmen in the employ of the Chi
cago newspaper trust.
By the way, the newspaper gun
men who killed Conductor Frank
Witt and Teamster Hehr are walk
ing the streets of Chicago as free as
anybody.
Healthman Young shows a grain
of common sense in this age of hys
terical reform. He says kissing isn't
deadly and for the kissers to go as
far as they like.
They would do it anyhow, of
course, but it is refreshing to, hear a
man say something in print now and
then that sounds human.
rroDamy most ot tne agitation
against kissing came from men and
women nobody wanted to kiss.
Pete Bartzen and his bunch are not
helping the Hearst-Lawrence case
any by refusing to pay that special
grand jury.
As for politics, McCormick, on the
county board, is outplaying Battling
Peter to beat the band and simply
by forcing his hand on that thing
every few days.
This is the' last week people can
dance the tango in the cafes. Those
who are rich enough to belong to
clubs, however, can. dance all they
please and drink all night if they
want to.
If it is proper for bankers to con
trol the banking business of the
country and superintend the enforce
ment of banking laws, WHY NOT
Let the burglars organize and ad
minister the burgling laws?
If all citizens who are in business
that is regulated by law could have
representation on a board charged
with the administration of that law
It would be very satisfactory to them.
PEOPLE AND THINGS
The essence of the banking law is
control. President Wilson is right.
The people should control the bank
ing system, not the bankers.
The day is coming when the people
will even have greater control over
the newspapers than they have now.
Business is rapidly becoming PUB
LIC instead of PRIVATE. There is
no business that is private enough to
be independent of the public. What
affects the public interest can't be
private, properly.
No bank that has the people's
money on deposit and makes money
by using it and lending it can pos
sibly be a private business concern.
It is a public servant and should be
regulated by its master.
The perfect baby, rating 100 per
cent, has been found again, this time
at Passaic, N. J. His hair is brown,
eyes blue, pulse fine, lungs sound,
etc., etc., etc.
All right so far as it eoes. but we're
making np bets on the 100 per cent
perfection until they've examined
the little critter's appendix.
Duchess of Marlborough is mak
ing London howl because a doorten
der refused her admission to Am
bassador Page's Fourth of July re
ception. Denial of a chance to see Page in
knee breeches is enough to make any
lady mad.
Mexicans have slain hundreds of
Americans and-" Woodrow"" Wilson
doesn't know it, according to Hearst.
No use talking, the U. S. army and
navy have got to protect mother's
ranch in Mexico.
Both Canadian and States dis
patches announce that Thaw's law
yers are making "a hot fight for de
lay." Sure thing. That's what lawyers
usually fight for, save as to the mat
ter of collecting .their fees. The
whole theory of litigation is to pre
vent the other side from getting anywhere.
