I INVITE CLOSE PUBLIC ATTENTION TO THE DECLARATION OF
WAR BY GEO. P. BENT, PRESIDENT OF THE GEO. P. BENT COM
PANY, MANUFACTURERS OF CROWN PIANOS, AGAINST THE CHI
I DO THIS BECAUSE THE FIGHT IS BEING MADE INSIDE THE
RANKS OF BIG BUSINESS FOR THE EVIDENT PURPOSE OF ORGAN
IZING ADVERTISERS TO INTIMIDATE A NEWSPAPER, AND BECAUSE
THE OTHER NEWSPAPERS WILL PROBABLY GIVE NO PUBLICITY TO
IT; AND THE TRIBUNE ITSELF WILL PROBABLY SIT BACK IN
STUPID DIGNITY AND IGNORE THE ATTACK.
YET THE PRINCIPLE INVOLVED IS OF VITAL IMPORTANCE TO
THE PUBLIC, AND THERE IS REAL NEWS IN THE ACTIVITIES OF
MR. BENT NEWS THAT AFFECTS THE GENERAL PUBLIC, BECAUSE
IT INVOLVES THE FREEDOM OF THE PRESS.
I have freely criticized the Tribune for some of its vices, such as em
ploying gunmen and sluggers, using its influence to get special privileges in
the way of low rental on public school land, hounding public men who won't
obey its orders, trying, to set itself up as a political boss, persecuting a
