Calumet, Mich., Sept. 16. It is,evident that: James 'MacNaughton, man
' ager of the Calumet & Hecla and. at least twelve other 'mining companies,
has determined to fight the- miners to a finish, jsvithout yielding an inch.
Here yesterday he-spurned the good offices of the United States gov
ernment, dIplomaticaIly, tendered through John A. Moffitt, special repre
sentative of the Department bf 'Labor. Moffitt was turned down emphat
ically and cold and the matter wouldhave ended there If "Moffitt had con
ceded to MacNaughton the title of "King of the Copper Country."
But 'Moffitt, determihedo give every mine manager a' chance to ac
cept the government's good 'offices, today struck a human, being in Theo
dore Dangler, manager of the Mohawk mines, who got busy and arranged
a conference between Moffitt and the mine operators, to be held, at the
Houghton Club on Wednesday morning. v ...

the local Chamber of Commerce, which met and, after finding the strikers
