SSSSSiySfS gg5'!"J'jii' w. MMMMMHM slarted with -the Giants Daly had plenty of chance to work. The Sox squad was small, and the youngster at various times has played first base, the outfield, and behind the bat. Daly is a backstop, so it is not fair to judge him from a fielding stand point on his performances in the gar den and at first base. Not that he has dubbed in these positions, but he is essentially a catcher, and that is the point on which he should be considered. It is in the batting line, however, that Daly has caused the greatest comment. Day in and day out he has whaled away at the Giant pitchers, and he is one of the leading batters on the present jaunt. A surprising number of his bingles have been for extra bases. Two have been circuit clouts. Admit that the pitching is not quite up to mid-season standard, and still you do not detract from Daly's abil ity. Mathewson, Tesreau, Promme and the other members of the Giant staff are showing a strong brand of puzzlement, and are not lobbing the ball over the plate. They are pitching as well as 70 per cent of therbig leag uers do during a real campaign. Daly has also handled himself well back of the log. He takes the left handed speed of Russell or the right mitt smoke of Scott with equal facil ity, and throws well to 'the bases, thought not as Schalk, of course. Ray is at the top of the list in this department. If the spring .training season were to open now Daly would be sure of a berth with the Sox on the showing he has made against the Giants. Cal lahan will follow his playing closely for the remainder of the trip. The youngster will have every chance. Schalk is to desert at the coast, and from then on the brunt of the receiv ing will fall on the boy from New England. The addition of Daly, if he con tinues his present clip, will give the "White Sox the best catching crew in big league baseball. There may be other teams with a single star of Schalk's worth, but no other man ager can point to such aggregation of young men of equal ability. Take Schalk, Daly and Kuhn and compare them with the backstoppers on other teams, and you will under stand why we say Commy has the Midas touch. Rain butted in at Abilene, Tex., yesterday and prevented a game be tween the Sox and Giants. This is the first postponement of the trip. The teams exhibit today in El Paso. American League directors are holding their annual meeting this afternoon in the, office of President Ban Johnson. The league pennant will be formally presented to Connie Mack. Connie said the presentation would cause no surprise, as he knew about the pennant last April. A painting will also be given to President Comiskey of the White Sox. The canvas shows Commy dressed asJ'The Trapper," capturing a bear. Commy's athletes captured several "bears" during the city series. As a football game Saturday's af fair between the Maroons and North western will be a fine little parade for Chicago. Coach Grady loses a regular or two every day, and at the present rate he will not have enough men to fill out the positions. Greer, the quarterback, was taken sick yes terday and is through for the year. This is news to some folks, who didn't know the Purple had ever started. In a lecture Coach Grady showed his men how to meet the Maroon plays. It's a secret Bob Moha. and Cus Christie have been matched for a ten-round bout in Milwaukee Nov. 24.'Moha has been promised a chance at George Carpen tier, the Frenchman, in Paris, if he wins. If Jack Dillon continues to take on weight at the Tate he is going now he will be forced from the middle to the heavyweight class in the near future. h&u JatJts-1tU&jJSc . r ytiwft, f am, A .atoTftV.Waiia&alffifcl
