Formerly a major magnate was
forced to placeJn the-draft drawing
the name of the man wanted. That
rule was changed so that it was only
necessary to put in the club's name.
This left the major club free to pick
the star of a minor team.
The system is not satisfactory to
the minors and they are demanding
Billy Gibson, fight promoter of
Madison Square Garden N, Y., is an
ambitious and well-meaning person,
but he is undertaking a task that
borders on the impossible.
He plans a fight between Freddy
Welsh, English lightweight, and Jack
Britton, the winner to meet Willie
Ritchie for the title.
Several conditions occur which
would make the three-cornered
elimination tournament nothing but
a dream. In the first place, there are
three temperaments to be considered.
Again, Ritchie and Welsh were
matched to fight in Vancouver some

time ago, and Ritchie canceled the
bout for some reason which has not
yet been made public. He was guar
anteed $16,000, so the provocation
must have been great
Above all, the championship can
not be decided in a ten-round bout,
and that is the limit the New York
boxing commission allows Gibson.
Ritchie was offered a large purse
for a direct match with Welsh, but
turned it down. He boxes Tommy
Murphy in San Francisco, Dec. 10,
and wants to get that bout out of
Britton has been matched with
Mike Glover for a ten-round bout in
Brooklyn Thanksgiving Day.
A nine-game series between the
Phillies and Athletics is almost a cer
tainty for next spring, starting April
1. The proposed later opening of the
regular season will make the games
possible. A break will be made in the
series for contests with Washington
and the Giants.

matched to fight in Milwaukee
