DIARY OF FATHER TIME
Why the turkey became the na
tional bird, second in importance to
the eagle, especially around Thanks
giving time, I do not know, except
that it was the most available bird
at hand when the Pilgrims set aside
the first day of Thanksgiving at Ply
mouth, in 1621, after their first har
vest. The Massachusetts Bay Colony
celebrated Thanksgiving for the first
time in 1630 and frequently there
after until 1680 when it became an
annual festival in that state; in Con
necticut as early as 1639 and annual
ly after 1647, except in 1675.
During the war of independence
the Continental Congress appointed
one or more thanksgiving days each
year, except in 1777. President Wash
ington appointed Nov. 26, 1789, as
Thanksgiving Day and another in
1795. Various days were observed
thereafter, until 1864, when Lincoln
named the fourth Thursday in No
vember as Thanksgiving Day, and
since that time each president has
annually followed his example.
