Civil engineers are working desperately to avert a collapse of the street in Wabash, avenue, in front of the new Marshall Field building, fol lowing the sinking in front of the building on the Randolph street side. jt City officials and representatives of the Marshall Field estate are al x most ready to admit the charge of carelessness which rests on them fol lowine' the wreck of the street. iffi Deputy Commissioner of Public Works Joseph Kostner openly charged that the blame rested on those who were connected with the construction of the building. Building Conimissioner Henry Ericcson, whose duty it is to see that all buildings are on solid foundations, was busily engaged this morning in sidetracking the charge that has been leveled at his head by those who examined the cave-in. The street collapsed last night shortly after ten o'clock .and left a hole from Wabash avenue west to the alley about 10 feet deep. The car tracks were almost submerged. .The presence of mind of a motorman who was piloting a car over the street when the accident occurred prevented a tragedy.
