THE 12TH ST. STORE CLERKS
The 12th Street Store, 12th and
Halsted streets, is known as a work
house among its employees. Long
hours and small pay is the system.
None of the girls care to tell what
they receive, but acknowledge that
the pay" is less and the hours longer
than in the downtown stores.
The 12th Street Store has found a
way to come just within its provi
sions, and exact every minute that
the law allows them from the women
and girls employed.
The store opens at 9 a. m., the
girls receive two hours for dinner and
one hour for supper and quit at 10
Every other day they arrive at 11
a. m., receive no dinner hour and one
hour for supper and quit at 10 p. m.
No one is allowed to ring up their
time before their lunch hours are up.
but if one should happen to be one
minute later, they are severely lec
tured and threatened with dismissal.
The store is ordinarily open two
nights a week; Tuesdays and Satur
days. During the Christmas season
For the last few Sundays the em
ployes have been fixing up stock and
preparing for the holiday rush. For
the half day's work they receive an
average of 50 cents and their only
day of rest spoiled.
Sunday, December 21st, the store
was open for business from 9 a. m.
to 12:30 p. m. The girls had to- come
or lose their jobs.
"We don't work long enough," said
one wearily, "so we will put in a few
more hours Sunday."
Most of the girls appeared worn
out and in need of rest.
The 12th Street Store has a bene
volent association which is supposed
to pay sick benefits to any employe
that may be ill.
Twenty-five cents a month is de
ducted from each one's pay for this
One of the girls said, "One day II
was too ill" to come to work. My
roommate, who works in the store,
told the floor manager and superin
tendent that I will ill in bed and
would not be in that day.
"That week happened to be assess
ment week. When I received my pay
I found my assessment 25 cents
and one day's pay, deducted.

EASY WAY TO CLEAN DRAIN PIPE
This is the season of the year
when people want to keep the drain
pipes open so as to prevent freezing
as much as possible. One of the best
ways to do this is to secure a length
of hose pipe witxf a screw coupling on
Screw one end to the outlet on the
elbow of the drain underneath the
sink and the other end on the hot
water spigot. Then cover the trap
or outlet for the water in the sink
with a piece of wood faced with rub
ber on the underside. Put one foot
on the wood and turn on the water
