'FRISCO CHEERING UP
Not far from the time when Minor
ity. Leader Mann was doing his best
calamity howling on the floor of the
House, San Francisco was doing
something, too, that Mann and his
fellow promoters of calamity might
Times are no better in San Fran
cisco than elsewhere. She has lots
of men who are out of work and lots
of merchants and manufacturers
who are "sailing close to the wind."
But, does she lie back and howl in
despair? She does not.
Last Thursday evening, San Fran
cisco's Municipal Band was ordered
out to the intersections of her big
cross-town avenues. The pavements
were cleanly swept and small squads
of police were detailed to prevent un
seemly ribaldry. Then the folks
danced rag, tango, one-step, any
thing you liked that you could per
form without knocking the legs from
under everybody else.
The thing will not appease hunger,
or keep out snow or rain, or buy
clothes. But it will unquestionably
encourage a high spirit with which to
confront troubles. Certain it is that
if we all lie back and howl calamity,
we'll have calamity. United howling
can produce most anything, good or
bad, in this country.
If Minority Leader Mann cannot
whistle, or sing, maybe he can dance,
and we suggest that some Marine
band furnish dance music for con
gress every time some considerable
part of that body gets "the blues" and
interrupts what might be remedial
legislation with a period of profes
sional calamity howling.
Really, San Francisco seems to
have set a fine example. God help
the rich; the poor can dance!

Maybe the rebels started that report
that Huerta had secured a big loan.
