A CONSISTENT WOMAN
Mrs. Maude Sharje of Newton,
Mass., practices what she preaches.
She does not think it is right to' shed
blood to gratify human appetite or
vanity. For 11 years she has; eaten'
no meat and worn no furs, leather
shoes or belts or ivory ornaments..
Her hats .are trimmed with lace -or
ribbons or artificial flowers.
Her table groaned with good things,
to eat last Thanksgiving and. again
on Christmas, but there was neither
roast beef nor turkey.
A "faddist? Yes. At least tliafs,
what the neighbors call her. Still,
a kind and gentle and quite inoffen
sive ' faddist, you'll have to admit;
and certainly a consistent one.
Her notion is that the life of ani
mals is a natural right and therefore
sacred. Moreover, to take it except
in self defense she thinks is cruel and
helps to breed a spirit of -indifference
to human life. She has succeeded
jn getting quite a group of persons to
join her in a meatless" pact.
Which shows that a consistent
leader can get a following for almost
"any "ism" by diligence and sincerity.
