IS THE HUMAN RACE REALLY
rjyiMQo WHAT STATISTICS SAY
Is the human race degenerating?
ureat men have been asserting for
years that it is. Francis Galton, first
and greatest of eugenists, speaks of
the "increase of deterioration of the
masses," and says we have sunk to
a level "little above that of trained
idiots." Dr. Kellogg of Battle Creek
maintains that "a tide of degeneracy
is rolling upon us," and cites many
scientists to prove it
Race degeneracy would end in the
most appalling catastrophe of human
history utter race extinction!
Here are a few of the data and
statistics which have been assembled
lor the consideration of "eugenists"
men who are studying the possibili
ties of race extinction.
The number of defectives and de
pendents upon the state is increasing
enormously, as shown by the follow
ing table, which gives the number
per 100,000 of population:
1890 . 1910
Feeble minded 8.4 22.5
Insane 118.2 204.2
Juvenile delinquents. 23.7 27.2
Dependents on cha'ty 179.8 431.4
Nearly 3 per cent of the children in
an average American school system
are defective and 50 per cent of them
never get beyond the fifth grade!
The birth rate is decreasing so
rapidly in America that, should it
continue to decrease at 'same, rate,
there would be NO children born at
all in the year 2014!
The death rate is increasing.
Tuberculosis is carrying off 200,000
a year. There are 1,200,000 sufferers
from it in America. The total
economic Joss caused by it is esti
mated at $900,000,000 annually.
The death rate from diseases of
heart, kidney and liver has doubled
in the last three decades.
The prevalence of cancer has in
creased 500 per cent in 60 years!
Unnecessary disease costs the
United States $1,500,000,000 annual
ly, and an American dies every min
ute from a preventable cause!
SENSATIONAL RESCUE OF 108
MADE AT SEA
Yarmouth, N. S., Jan. 15. The
passengers and crew of the royal
mail packet Cobequid were rescued
last night in response to wireless sig
nals of distress sent out thirty-six
.hours before.
The rescue was effected as. the
Cobequid was being smashed to
pieces on Trinity rock, six mHes off
Port Maitland. The steamers West
port and John L. Cann were first to
get boats into the water and were
aided by the government steamer
Lansdowne andthe Rappahannock.
There were 108 passengers on the
Cobequid, and thtfugh they had been
almost two days exposed to zero
weather and the terror of death at
sea the rescue was so orderly that
the women were lowered into the
boats first, then the men passengers
and last the captain and his crew.
The delay of the rescuers in reach
ing the Cobequid was because the
wireless operator could not tell the
location of the ship and a heavy
vapor caused by the intense cold on
the water shrouded the vessel, which
was coated with ice.

SYMPATHY
"You see that?" Mrs. Tomkins
cried vehemently, as she raised a
mixing bowl in which she had just
broken an egg. "That is the second
bad egg I have found today. I be
lieve that grocer keeps all the bad
ones he gets in his old shop for me!"
"Well, you shouldn't get angry about
it, Ellen," said her husband. "You
ought to have more sympathy."
"Sympathy!" she echoed. "What do
you mean? Sympathy with tie gro
cer?" "No, with the eggs," he re
plied. "Think how long they must
nave been trying to be good I
