DIARY OF FATHER TIME
It strikes me as a curious thing
that the onjy specimen of the 16th
century warship should have been
recently discovered at Woolwich,
England, for the old wooden vessels
often attained a ripe old age and it
would be expected that a few would
have been preserved as curiosities.
Talking of old ships, in 1901, a. ves
sel dating from the time of Columbus
was reported trading between Span
ish ports, and it was not until 1824
that the Betsy Cairns, which took
William and Mary to England, was
wrecked at the mouth of the Tyne.
And the' small ship In which James II
escaped from Rochester was still do
ing duty conveying stores from dock
to dock as late as 1823.
