ton. The drunkard and the vagrant
may get as far as the police court, but
before the judge can say "$30 or 30
days," up will step Mayor Smart, "big
brother" to all "down and outs" and
he'll tell the court, "I want this man.
I have some work for him to do. If
you suspend his sentence I promise
you that he'll behave." Then "Big
Brother" Smart sends the "down-and-outer"
to one of his committee of
14 "big brothers," who provide him
with a job, and clothes, and food.

ONE LETTER PLACES
Names with only one letter have
been bestowed on places as well as
persons. There is a village called O in
Normandy, not far from Argenton.
Two Chinese towns are named, re
spectively, Y and U. There is a river
Y in Holland, and one of the bays of
