KICK ON THE SHAW MONOPOLY
Will Take Up Fight To Have Fifty-Cent Rate Reduced
To Thirty Claim Andy Lawrence Is Inter-.
T ested in Shaw Company.
The taxicab monopoly enjoyed by
the Walden W. Shaw Uvery Com
pany through their mysterious influ
ence with the city council, which
enabled them to&boost the rates sky
high and then choke off all competi
tors, is the subject of a protest sent
to eevry alderman by two hundred in
dependent taxicab owners.
Part of this mysterious influence
which the2Shaw Company has is seen
in the report tb;at Andy Lawrence,
publisher of the Chicago Examiner,
is' a stockholder in the company!'
Through this influence the Shaw
Company was able in to jam'
through the city council an ordinance
raising the maximum auto rates from
40 cents for the first half-mile to 50
cents. In New York the Tate is 3X
cents for the first half-mile.
Backed by their pull at the City
Hall the Shaw Company started out
to establish a monopoly of all the
trade at the big loop hotels and res
taurants. They did this by buying the privi
leges at fabulous amounts and by
giving interest on all fares.
The company pays $15,000 a year
to the Hotel Sherman to get all calls
