Special Investigator for the Day Book Finds What It
Means to Work for Henry Ford at $5 a Day and for
the International Harvester Co. at $2 a Day
Henrjr Ford's plan to pay a mini
mum wage of $5 a day in his auto
plant has been in operation about
three months. Much publicity was
given it at its inauguration and the
world wondered how it would work
out. To learn exactly how it is work
ing The Day Book, in connection with
a number of other leading news
papers, sent a special investigator
and photographer to Detroit to study
conditions at and around Ford's plant
and among the families of his. em
ployes, and to report exactly what he
learned.
Immediately upon the conclusion.
of his survey at Ford's this investi
gator was shifted to Chicago, with
instructions to make the same kind
of an investigation of a plant of the
great International Harvester trust
and to be just as fair about it. The
plant in Chicago is the Deering Har
vester Works, where the minimum
wage is $2 a day.
Our investigator's double survey is
finished. Today we print parallel
stories and parallel pictures of fami
lies under Ford's $5 minimum wage
and the trust's $2 minmum wage.
The Day Book's great industrial
contrast will be completed tomorrow.
