Willis and Marceline are black of
skin, though white of heart. They
were slaves on the same plantation
long "befoh the wah." After the war
they decided to share their freedom
together. Marriage laws didn't count
for much with the freed slaves. So
Willis and Marceline got a httle cot
tage in the outskirts of New Orleans.
They had chickens, a cow and a gar
den. They didn't have a marriage
certificate, but that never worried
it was only when Willis learned
that, as Mareelina -wasn't his "lawful
wedded wife," she couldn't inherit his
property when he died that they went
to Rev. Levy Grant, colored minister,
and were married. And, though she's
probably the oldest bride in the world,
Marceline seemed to be the happiest.
