Mrs. James Rolph Greeting Big Jim,
Grizzly Bear She Presented to
Golden Gate Park in 'Frisco.
San Francisco, Cal. It's a bear. A
genuine California grizzly, and was
recently donated to the Gplden Gate
park by Maypr and Mrs. James Rolph,
Jr., of this city. The bear was a pet
of Mrs. Rolph for many years and is
the only black-haired bear in cap
tivity. Mrs. Rolph pays frequent visits to
the park in order to obserye the ani
mal. She has noticed quite a change
in the size of the beast and cannot
realize that it was once a toy for her
youngsters.
The bear was named Jim Rolph,
Jr., after the mayor, and is familiarly
called "Big Jim" by the children of
the park, owing to Iris enormous size.
Recently he devoured- a cub and
has since been kept in solitary con
finement. Big Jim weighs 600 pounds.
