lished all over the country by our
modern feudal barons the better off
this republic will be.
Forces of Law and Justice. The
Chicago Newsommenting on the
Colorado war, says
"The forces of law and justice are
weak indeed if they fail to bring per
manent peace with little further de
lay out of this condition of violent
anarchy."
There would have beert no trouble
had the forces of law been also the
forces of justice, but they were not.
.The law was pulling one way and
justice another.
All appeals to law for justice fell
on-ears that would not hear. When
men found they couldn't get justice
through appeals to the law, and that
all they got from the law were mur
derous bullets from the guns of hired
mercenaries, they armed themselves
to protect themselves and their fami
lies from injustice.
Get team work out of law and
justice and there will be no trouble.
As it is, they are as far apart as the
poles in Colorado and elsewhere.
Are We- All Criminals? I was talk
ing recently to the president of a big
brewery merger, and during the con
versation told him that he was a
criminal, that I way a criminal and
that every rich man he and I knew
-was a criminal.
He resented it. He agreed that he
had too big a belly, that he probably
ate more and drank more than his
"body needed, because he enjoyed the
good things of life, but he insisted
that he was not criminal.
Then we discussed what was crim
inal, and he, having been a lawyer
before he got to selling lager beer,
maintained that to be a criminal one
must violate some statutory law
which described some offense as a
crime.
"Well," I asked, "have you ever
done that?"
He said he hadn't. I insisted that 1
h had .and askpd him this question:
"Did yon ever fail to return all of
your property for taxation at its full
value' '
Then he laughed and admitted that
he was a criminal.
How many rich men in Chicago
can stand that test? How many of
then? who insist that the law hound
the petty criminals ever stand off
and take a good look at their own .
conduct?
I wonder how many members of
the Law and Order League lie when
they list their. property for taxation?
And even swear to a lie?
If the punishment prescribed by
law were inflicted for every violation,
of law, haw many of us would be in
prison?
